How to tell that is what you have
- Scratching, chirping or rustling in the wall or ceiling near the laundry
- The machine went from fine to useless within days rather than gradually
- Twigs, dry grass or feathers on the ground beneath the termination
- The same birds returning to one spot on the roof or wall
- A strong smell while a cycle runs
- The machine cutting out partway through, or posting a code
- It is somewhere between February and May
The tempo is the giveaway. Lint takes years. A nest is built in days.

Why a seldom-used machine is the likeliest candidate
This is the point specific to properties here and it is worth dwelling on.
A main laundry runs several times a week. Every cycle pushes air through the termination and lifts the flap, which is a continuous small disruption that discourages anything from settling in.
A guest house dryer used four times a year provides no such disruption. The termination sits undisturbed for months, straight through the nesting season, on a property where nobody has reason to look at that particular roof line.
So the machine nobody thinks about is the one most likely to have something living in its duct, and it will stay that way until somebody runs a load and wonders why the room smells. More on secondary machines here.
Why it is more than an inconvenience
Fire
The figures below come from the National Fire Protection Association rather than from us. Failure to clean is the largest single contributing factor in dryer fires and lint is the material most likely to catch first. A nest is that hazard compressed into a few inches and built from tinder.

Moisture
Every load has to discharge its humidity somewhere. Fully obstructed, it goes into the wall cavity, and in a house with plaster and finish work worth protecting that becomes an expensive repair rather than a nuisance.
The appliance
A completely blocked duct has the thermal fuse intervening constantly. Better machines will usually post a code or cut out, which at least signals the problem.
The birds
Put bluntly, running the machine with a nest in the duct kills whatever is in it. For most people that settles the question of whether to carry on and hope.
Why it should not just be pulled out
The roof
Tile splits where weight goes wrong, and on the hillside properties the access problem compounds that considerably.
The law
Species and season determine whether an occupied nest falls under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, federal legislation covering most native North American birds, under which disturbing an active nest holding eggs or young is an offense.

A guard, not a screen
Screening a termination seems sensible and is specifically not permitted. Mesh intercepts every fiber the machine produces, so within a season the duct is obstructed by your own lint instead of by wildlife.
Code requires the termination to open freely under airflow, with no screen, for exactly that reason. A purpose-made guard passes lint and stops birds. Where a previous owner has screened one, we find it and say so.

Properly rather than quickly
The fast version is to reach up, pull the nest, seat the cap and leave. It resolves nothing, because the compacted material the nest was damming up is still in the run and the termination that admitted one bird will admit the next.
Our approach: work out what is there and whether it is occupied, clear it, brush the run its full length, then fit a correct guard and check the hood and flap before coming down.
Keeping them out

- A flap that closes properly when the machine is off
- An intact hood, so there is no open ledge
- Particular attention to the machines nobody uses often
- Looking at them in January or early February, ahead of the season
Questions
How do I know that is what it is?
Speed gives it away. Lint chokes a duct over years, a nest appears within days, so the machine goes from working to useless almost between loads. Listen for scratching or chirping near the laundry and look for grass or feathers below the termination.
Is it genuinely dangerous?
It is. Dry nesting material sits against a duct carrying heated air, with whatever lint the nest has been damming up behind it. The obstruction also drives every load's moisture into the wall cavity.
Can I have somebody clear it?
Not just anybody. Tile roofs split underfoot and hillside properties compound that. Separately, an occupied nest can carry federal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act depending on species and season, and removing one without establishing that first is a genuine mistake.
What stops it recurring?
A manufactured termination with a bird guard, sized so lint passes and birds do not. Not screen mesh. Code is explicit: the termination must open freely under airflow and screens are excluded, because they pack with lint and become the hazard they were meant to prevent.
Why is this worse on our street?
Proximity to open ground. The preserve-adjacent and hillside properties back onto undeveloped desert, which means more birds hunting nesting sites and less competition for a warm sheltered cavity.
What about a guest house we rarely use?
Those are the likeliest of all. Months without the machine running means the termination sits undisturbed through the entire nesting season, which is precisely the opportunity a bird is looking for.
